Located in South Western NSW, Australia, is the World Heritage Listed Mungo National Park. It is noted for the archaeological remains discovered in the park. The remains of Mungo Man are the oldest human remains discovered in Australia, dating back more than 25 thousand years.
A short drive from the visitors centre will take you to the sand dunes , which are up to 40m high and stretch for approximately 40 klm. As we climbed the pure white dunes, dotted with Emu tracks, we expected to see the ocean over the ridge. It was very strange to reach the top and see a vast expanse of salt bush and mallee scrub where the old lakes had dried up eons ago.

The Walls of China , some as high as 30 metres and made of quartz and clay ,were formed over thousands of years through erosion by wind and rain. It is quite a dramatic landscape and when viewed in the early morning or late afternoon, long shadows are cast , and it takes on an eerie beauty .
Mildura, on the banks of the Murray River, was a great place to stay. You can make a day trip to Mungo, which is about 110 klm north. Even though we hadn’t booked ahead ( which we never do, and have been caught out ) we pulled into the Big 4 Golden River Holiday Park and got a cabin for a few nights. So much better than our digs at Hawker in the Flinders Rangers. Really clean, very comfortable beds and perfect for our needs.
